My best holiday ever has been in Great Yarmouth!
I have been lucky enough to stay all over the world but never really has that rest that I needed.
Last week I booked myself in at The Coronas Hotel in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk., and had the most relaxing stay of my life.
The hotel rooms was clean with it's own shower. I found the bed very comfy and slept like a log!
The owners do not bother with breakfast as people very rarely come down to eat it and prefer to make their own arrangements. The owners did allow me to use their vast dinning area to eat take away and play cards with my partner. They provided tea and coffee for a £1 when ever we asked and attended to us immediately. We had the use of a huge projection TV in guest lounge as well as the TV and free view in our rooms.
We also had bath towels and not just standard hand towels that was a nice little touch.
The owners gave us directions to café's and restaurants that offered great food at exceptional prices. We had breakfast at the Beach house on the sea front on our first morning. We paid £3.50 for a delicious and well cooked breakfast that could of easily fed 2 or 3 people it was so big. We had lunch in the Beach House restaurant that was next door to the Beach House Café where we had our breakfast, the surroundings were very attractive and comfortable and the food was of a very high standard. I had had the most delicious tikka masala and my partner had the standard grill. Both meals were so big that we could not finish them! The bill for those and two beers came to £19.30! Their main meal prices started at £2.20 per person. We went then had an evening meal at the Steak House, next door to the Beach House restaurant on the sea front. We both had roast beef with all the trimmings and milky coffees, the bill came to just under £15! The amount of succulent roast beef we were given was a ridiculously huge portion that would have been sufficient for 4 people. The owners and staff of these eating establishments offered open arms of warmth when you walked through the doors and made us feel and all the other customers feel like we were a part of a big happy family.
Our second night we got a fabulous Chinese meal from Regent Road, this road runs down the back of the Coronas Hotel. We ordered a take-away and took it back to our hotel. Lou and Michael dragged us in to the hotel dinning area and gave us crockery to eat from and then put the music on for us. This night was really special as they had also lit candles and told us to just leave the mess and they would clear it up when we had finished. This was just another one of the nice things they just can't help but do for the people that stay with them.
On the Friday night the hotel owners suggested a night out at a local pub in Regent Road where a friend of theirs had a gig. The promised a truly amazing night filled with dancing, singing and laughter, that was just what we got. When we were their we found out this guys name was Lee Stathams, he played the guitar and it was totally amazing......I mean really amazing! This guy played classic rock, blues, motown and much more without missing a chord! The atmosphere in the pub was electric and we made lots of new friends. Their was an older couple their who were really strutting their stuff on the dance floor, it turned out that they were the guitarists parents who were their in support of their son. The father is apparently a local legend for his singing and can be seen singing on the local market square. We would of liked to viewed this talent for ourselves but sadly had to go home before he would next be singing on the market again.....We will be going back to check him out as the locals in this bar said he was amazing vocally. As we were leaving this pub a couple of guys were talking and said the Lee was the brother of Jason Statham the actor, this was confirmed by the landlord of the pub.
We spent a little time on the beach, the hotel made us a packed lunch with hot and cold drinks to last us, this cost us £10 for both of us. They gave us so much food and drink that we finished our basket off for supper that night.
We went to the Hippodrome Circus, it was a fine building that offered spectacular entertainment for all the family. We saw ads for the Circus Horrors and thought we would most definitely book up with the hotel again so that we could come back for this show.
We tried out a bar called Jolly Rogers on the pier but found it was an over priced bar attempting to be a night club with a badly set up sound system that was irritating. Their was also a bar in front of it called pier tavern, this was a very tacky bar with very miserable staff, lots of flashing lights and a rough DJ....another bar trying to pretend to be a night club. The clientèle for these places came across as drinkers with no interest in their surroundings or in quality entertainment. We found this very sad.
Ceasers bar was another night spot we tried, this was more up market with better priced drinks, friendly staff but a rather boring set of 70's DJ's who would be out of place if taken out of Great Yarmouth. This bar offered a good night out and was very clean. Speaking to other customers in their they felt the same.
Karma Café, this place is the most confused place in Yarmouth. Nicely done up but trading as a café/night club.....it just does not work. It was sad to see what was so obviously an upmarket café being licensed to serve booze pretending to be a hip night club. The customers were quite hostile and for this reason I would not ever consider going back.
Another place to consider avoiding was Georges Café, Regent Road. The hotel owners did warm us that the food would be below average standard but Yarmouth was packed with tourists and we were hungry. The food was a disgrace and I wish we had of listened to them. The staff were friendly and lovely, they just can't cook or are so busy trying to provide meals using the cheapest of ingredients to maximize on profit that the food was not edible.
The hotel owners told us about a restaurant called Montecarlos on the sea front, they promised us that the hosts were lovely and the food was of a very hight standard. We went along and were greeted by a lovely Greek lady who took our order. The food was cooked fresh and our steaks were divine. The bill was £14.75 for a main and two drinks. I can certainly say that this was one of the best places that I have every eaten in.
We asked the hotel owners how they knew so much about the local places to eat in and go to to get entertained. They told us they had come here to run a club for a family member but the club was a real no hoper from the start as it had had it's day and now just had a really bad reputation hanging over it's head. They spent 2 years trying to make it work with little success. In the time they were at this club they lived without cooking facilities and relied on the local restaurants, they found all good and worst places to eat in. The owners, Michael and Lou were very down to earth and just trying to make a living. Their attitude was nice, they just wanted to rent out rooms to cover the bills, the profit's can wait, it's just important to have food in tummies and bills paid. This makes a change from many money hungry hotel owners that sting you every way possible. We found out that if they did make profit that they would like to turn the hotel in to a holiday spot for disabled people young and old and their families. We wish these two people great success as they truly were fabulous hosts with big hearts and open arms, they deserve success.
You can book to stay at this hotel on 0742 6042346. The offer all sorts of rooms and are one of the only hotels that has catered for a family with 4 children for £89 per night during summer season. When asked the hotel provided a toaster, jam, butter, cereals and milk in the morning for the guests who requested it. The family of 6 were charged £12 for breakfast, a true bargain for today.
We will return to this hotel as there are still so many placed that the hotel owners say are worth visiting. Based on visiting previous places they suggested and agreeing totally with what they had to say about them we are eager to try out the other places they recommended. The Time and Tide Museum has been highly recommended and so that will be on the definitely must do list. We would also like to go back and try out a place called Retro-Skate, we have been assured this is good affordable fun for all the family so will be taking our 3 children aged 20, 23 and 26 along as well as our 5 year old grandson.
Great Yarmouth is a very historic town with history oozing from every direction and almost every building in sight. The sea front has under gone
some alterations, pretty but not worth the cost. It would be great to see more parking along the sea front and the shabby shacks on the promenade removed for good. There is an unsightly eon building on the promenade that is their to show how wind farms work and to promote them, this building could really be in a less prominent place and does not have to hog the wonderful view of the sea.
There are many bowling greens in Great Yarmouth, these were packed most the time with several spectators.
We have heard that there is a horse racing and dog racing track that is well worth the visit as it has a restaurant and bar on offer.
Bressingham steam museum is quite close by and we would dearly love to visit this attraction.
We have heard about a pub called the Windmill at Cobham In Great Yarmouth that plays SKA, SKA and more SKA, this is something we truly love and look forward to.
Just to let you know, we have booked up to go back to the Coronas Hotel again soon with our children and a few friends, writing this has really hit home home fun and relaxation we had on our last visit, the money we saved by not leaving the UK was another reason for rebooking.

The people we have met in Great Yarmouth, business owners and locals, they were all lovely friendly people with so much to offer on advice on places to go and when to go. We had been told Yarmouth was violent, we did not see this side of Yarmouth and had a great time.
What we did see in Yarmouth was lots of struggling hard working honest people fighting to stay afloat in a cut throat market that is suffering from a definite lack of tourism, this is heart breaking for such a well known holiday spot that I spend time in as a child.
People in Great Britain may get cheap flights and hotels abroad, but how much do we spend on food, gifts and all the other trimmings when we go abroad? I know that in Great Yarmouth we had a relaxing and very affordable hotel accommodation and days out. There was plenty of free attractions for all in Great Yarmouth and many of the café's offer a kids meal with a drink for around £2.20, you really can't beat that.
I know that in London and Cambridge a latte will cost me £3 - £5 pounds, here it is on average £1.25 up to £1.95.
Yarmouth is worth a day visit just for the shopping alone, we found that there is many 99p and £1 shops here offering fresh chickens to expensive hair products for a £1 or less. Bread here is 99p a loaf of kings mill or £1.50 for two loaves. This shows the cost of living is affordable and offers a much better way of life for those who like their fresh vegetables and other fresh produce.
We spotted a bright yellow hotel while we were in Yarmouth and it was called faulty towers. The funniest thing is the owners real name is Michael Elphik! Not the famous actor known for the series Boon but the same name. We were told that a famous author from Greece had written a book about the hotel that Hollywood are now turning it into a film. Apparently the author went to collage in Yarmouth and stayed at the hotel and decided to write about it.
